When the 1971 war was on between India and Pakistan, Sekhon - an Indian Air Force fighter pilot was posted at Srinagar airbase.
On 14th December the air base was attacked by six Pakistani fighter aircraft. Sekhon took them on singlehandedly. He shot down one aircraft and seriously damaged another before the sheer numbers got the better of him.
Sekhon was awarded India's highest gallantry award - Param Vir Charka. He remains till date, the only Air Force officer to have been awarded this award.
